Tongwang's Home
By Lu Yuzhong
My first contact with Tongwang was in 2007, when I was doing an internship after graduating from undergraduate. The college allowed us to freely choose internship units, including procuratorates, courts, judicial bureaus, and law firms. With curiosity about the lawyer profession, I decided to go to a law firm for an internship. Tongwang was the only law firm available, so I went to Tongwang with eight classmates for a graduation internship. The internship at Tongwang was very pleasant. Many internship teachers took us to handle cases, write documents, have dinner and karaoke, which made me particularly yearn for the work and life of a lawyer. Since then, every time I saw the teachers, they told me to go home and visit more often.
After graduation, I went to work for Qinzhou Port Group. After passing the bar exam, the crossroads of life came. Should I continue to work in a state-owned enterprise or realize my original dream of becoming a lawyer? Facing the secondment notice from the group headquarters and the employment notice from the law firm, I still don't know whether the original choice was correct, but I chose the lawyer profession. I dare not tell the teachers of Tongwang about this choice (especially Uncle Zuo, who has been paying attention to my work), because their suggestion is to continue working in state-owned enterprises and not rush to resign to become a lawyer. Similarly, now I often advise recent graduates to enter the system or friends in the system not to resign. Behind the glamour of lawyers are deep scars and tears.

In 2015, after practicing for 5 years, I asked the leader to transfer to Tongwang. After an hour of conversation, the leader asked me to take a written test and an interview according to the procedure. So, I went to Tongwang to practice, and it has been 6 years now. In the past 6 years, from transferring to joining the partnership to entering the management committee, every step feels like a new challenge, but it is also the basis for gaining confidence in my lawyer career. Some of the colleagues of the same age when I joined the firm have also transferred to other firms, and some have opened their own firms as directors. When chatting, everyone feels that Tongwang has this or that problem, and they also feel that this or that decision is restricting the development of young lawyers, but after leaving Tongwang, everyone feels that Tongwang is indeed good. The atmosphere between colleagues is good, and everyone communicates happily; the platform is good, and some big cases cannot be separated from big firms; the system is good, which is convenient for managing lawyers...

Like Deputy Director Lin Ziguang, I am often asked when I will open my own firm? Are you developing your own platform now to establish your own firm? There are even rumors that I have already opened my own firm, so some people ask me when to go through the formalities. Faced with these questions, I usually just smile it off. But this also reflects the general situation of traditional big firms: backbone lawyers in their 30s get rid of the constraints of the older generation by opening firms, establish their own brands and prestige, and better develop the market. Market competition is cruel, and without strong capabilities, you may be eliminated by the market, but in the face of competition, opening a firm or being the director of a law firm does not necessarily give you competitiveness. On the contrary, it is easier to obtain greater development with the help of a large platform. From the perspective of development, traditional big law firms and growing young lawyers should not be in an antagonistic relationship, but rather a relationship of mutual achievement. As long as they move forward together with one heart and tolerate each other, all problems are just small stones on the road ahead, which do not affect the rider and the steed's gallop.

Tongwang's 25-year growth history is actually a microcosm of the development of Chinese lawyers: partners splitting and merging, growing young lawyers leaving, absorbing more new forces, professional division of labor, integrated management of headquarters and branches, planned management, handover of new and old management, friction between innovation and tradition, etc. The Chinese lawyer industry is developing healthily, and Tongwang is constantly proving with its achievements that while developing healthily, it can also achieve the ideals of young lawyers.
Faced with industry innovation issues, Tongwang is also trying and exploring, and is also encouraging young lawyers to innovate. At this time, I am also facing the second crossroads in my life. Should I be a lawyer who takes on cases and handles cases like I have for the past ten years, or should I become a lawyer who innovates in the vast platform of ideas? Like the last choice, I don't know if this choice is correct, but subconsciously I tell myself to go on without hesitation. In the process of exploration, Tongwang's leaders and colleagues have also given me great support and help, which makes me deeply feel the big picture and strong tolerance of an excellent law firm.

Tongwang is small, because it is just a family; Tongwang is also big, because it can accommodate many dreams. If you treat Tongwang with the heart of a tolerant family member, Tongwang is a warm home; if you treat Tongwang with the heart of a tolerant world, Tongwang is a take-off port.
