With eloquent arguments and a strong sense of justice, classic Hong Kong TVB legal dramas have left a deep impression on those born in the '80s and '90s. In reality, what sparks will fly when prosecutors and lawyers meet? To showcase the demeanor of young prosecutors and lawyers, enhance the dialectical abilities and legal theoretical level of procuratorial officers and lawyers, and strengthen communication and exchanges between the legal community, the first Prosecutors and Lawyers Debate Competition, jointly organized by Ningtie Procuratorate and Guangxi Tongwang (Liuzhou) Law Firm, was successfully held on the afternoon of September 23, 2020, at the Tongwang (Liuzhou) office.

The participating teams in this debate competition consisted of two representative teams each selected by Ningtie Procuratorate and Guangxi Tongwang (Liuzhou) Law Firm. The judges of the debate competition were Chen Xin, member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of Liuzhou Municipal Bureau of Justice, Secretary of the Party Committee of Liuzhou Lawyers Industry, Wei Jinxin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Liuzhou Lawyers Industry, President of Liuzhou Lawyers Association, He Xiangcheng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Procurator-General of Nanning Railway Transportation Branch of the People's Procuratorate of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chen Shanrong, member of the Party Leadership Group of Liuzhou Lawyers Industry, Vice President of Liuzhou Lawyers Association, Director of Guangxi Tongwang (Liuzhou) Law Firm, and Zhang Ting, full-time member of the Procuratorial Committee and Procurator of Nanning Railway Transportation Branch of the People's Procuratorate of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Wu Binjiang, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Procurator-General of Liuzhou Railway Transportation Procuratorate, was also invited as a guest to the competition.

At the opening ceremony of the debate competition, lawyer Chen Shanrong delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the organizers to the specially invited judges, participating teams, guests, and audience, and wished the debate competition a complete success.

In the group stage, the topic faced by the prosecution and defense was "If the secretary of the municipal party committee is entrusted to seek benefits for an enterprise, and the person in charge of the enterprise gives a villa to the secretary of the municipal party committee afterwards, does the secretary of the municipal party committee's behavior constitute the crime of accepting bribes?"

Faced with such difficult and complex, seemingly right and wrong case topics, the participating prosecutors and lawyers unraveled the complexities, eloquently argued the legal principles, and put forward one powerful point of view after another. Their unique perspectives, the blending of legal principles and human sentiments, and the clash of humanity and rationality won warm applause from the audience.

After the competition, the judges gave comprehensive and detailed comments on the performance of the players on both sides, and shared their many years of practical experience with the players and the audience on the skills of questioning and answering in court.

After fierce competition among the participating teams in the two rounds of the group stage, the second prosecution team of Ningtie Procuratorate and the second defense team of Guangxi Tongwang (Liuzhou) Law Firm advanced to the final of this debate competition.

The topic of the final was "Does a citizen's use of private relief to resist illegal administrative actions constitute a crime?"

The contestants prepared carefully, and the prosecution and defense were engaged in a heated debate on the field. According to the set conditions of the case, the prosecution and defense launched a fierce debate from the aspects of logic, facts, and theory. The prosecution's accusations were based on the law, and the defense's arguments were sonorous and forceful. The atmosphere of the competition was warm, and the audience applauded the debaters' wonderful debates.

Chen Xin, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Liuzhou Municipal Bureau of Justice, and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Liuzhou Lawyers Association, provided special general commentary on the competition. She noted that the two teams had distinct characteristics. Prosecution Team Two demonstrated resilience in their arguments, maintained appropriate decorum, and exhibited rigorous legal logic, reflecting thorough preparation and strong professional qualities. Defense Team Two displayed elegance in their debating skills, delivering their arguments smoothly and using standardized language. The outstanding performances of both teams brought this year's final to a successful conclusion.

After fierce competition, the second prosecution team and the second defense team won the Best Prosecution/Defense Team Award in this debate competition, and the first prosecution team and the first defense team won the Excellent Prosecution/Defense Team Award.

Prosecutors Kang Chaojun and Yang Yudan won the Best Demeanor Award and Best Debater Award respectively for their outstanding performance in the competition.

At the closing ceremony of the debate competition, Deputy Procurator-General He Xiangcheng delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers and made a summary of the competition. He expressed his full affirmation of this event and his warm congratulations to the winning teams and winning players, and hoped that the prosecutor and lawyer debate competition could be branded and standardized in the future, and truly build a communication bridge between cross-regional prosecution and defense subjects.

More than 30 people, including representatives of prosecutors from Ningtie Procuratorate and representatives of lawyers from Guangxi Tongwang (Liuzhou) Law Firm, watched the competition.
